The most rewarding aspect of my work is with brain trauma patients! I have assisted
with stroke, aneurysm, multiple sclerosis, parkinsons and recovery after brain tumor
surgery. Each patient is unique yet their desire to heal to the best of their ability is the
same.
I received my first client from Stanford Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department. Having
plateaued with their patient the medical insurance would no longer cover appointments.
They revered them to me for yoga therapy. I quickly discovered a broader range of
therapy was needed.
Drawing upon my skills as a yoga/mat pilates/healthy back/water therapy and senior
fitness instructor my clients all began to make measurable improvements and many
were approved for additional physical therapy.
My first client was one of the best things that ever happened, opening my world up to
the tremendous need for assistance in recovery from brain trauma. The patient’s loss is
huge, it can include: Complete loss of movement in one or more extremities, loss of fine
motor control, walking, speaking, balance, vision, swallowing, toileting, dressing,
decision making to name a few.
Many patients are house bound with care givers, while others using adaptive equipment
can regain a fair amount of independence. I even had one client install an adaptive
steering wheel in his vehicle.
After assessing my client’s strengths, balance, weakness and fears, I create a treatment
plan that is individual to their particular needs. No two clients are exactly the same.
My approach to therapy is holistic. Treatment is not just the physical aspect, it is also
important to deal with the mental and emotional aspects of what has happened. In many
cases some patients are now homebound needing fulltime care, others have more
independence but use canes and walkers. Regardless of the level of loss, each patient
has experienced extreme trauma and is in mourning for their old lives. Together we
create obtainable goals that foster confidence while working on acceptance.
